Ground-Level Composite Deck with Smart Panel Skirting & Multi-Directional Steps

This project involved the construction of a slightly elevated ground-level composite deck designed to enhance backyard accessibility while maintaining a clean and modern finish. As a trusted Toronto deck builder, ATBCON installed durable composite decking boards selected for long-term performance and low maintenance. Though close to grade, the structure was properly framed and stabilized to ensure structural reliability. The perimeter was enclosed with smart panel skirting, providing a finished appearance while protecting the underside of the deck from debris and visibility. A custom two-step staircase was integrated into the design, extending across three directions to create a balanced and inviting transition to the surrounding yard. The railing system features composite-look aluminum pickets, combining the aesthetic warmth of wood tones with the strength and durability of aluminum construction. The result is a refined, functional, and visually cohesive outdoor platform built for everyday use and lasting performance.

Scope

Design and construction of a slightly elevated ground-level composite deck featuring smart panel skirting enclosure, multi-directional two-step staircase, and composite-look aluminum picket railing installation.

Challenge

Although near grade, the deck required precise leveling and framing to ensure long-term stability. Coordinating the three-direction two-step layout demanded careful alignment to maintain symmetry and safe transitions. Installing smart panel skirting while preserving ventilation and clean finishes also required detailed execution.

This project involved the construction of a custom wooden deck for a downtown Toronto home situated on a narrow urban lot with a compact backyard. Custom Wooden Ravine Staircase with Intermediate Deck

This project involved the construction of a custom wooden staircase system designed to provide safe and structured access from a backyard overlooking a ravine. The natural slope of the property created a steep and challenging descent that would have been difficult and unsafe without a formal access structure. To resolve this, a fully framed wooden staircase system was installed, incorporating multiple landings to break the vertical drop and improve comfort during descent. Partway down the staircase, a small intermediate deck platform was integrated on the left side. This landing deck creates a pause point within the descent and offers a usable outdoor space without requiring full access to the lower grade. The staircase continues beyond the deck platform, allowing direct access to the flat area at the bottom of the ravine slope. The railing system combines wood framing with aluminum pickets, delivering structural strength while maintaining visual openness. The result is a functional and aesthetically refined grade-transition solution that transforms a steep backyard into a safely accessible and usable landscape.
