How Much Does a Fence Cost in Toronto and the GTA?
Updated October 20, 2026
Most fences we install across Toronto and the GTA cost between $5,000 and $25,000. A pressure-treated wood privacy fence usually runs $60 to $100 per linear foot installed, and cedar $80 to $130 per linear foot.
Those are planning ranges from our own quotes. Gates, grade changes, old concrete and the property line usually move the price more than the choice of board.
Price per linear foot by material
| Material | Installed price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure-treated wood | $60 – $100 / ft | Long rear and side runs, stepped grades, and the best value for privacy. |
| Cedar | $80 – $130 / ft | Front and street-facing sections where the finish matters. Takes stain well. |
| Composite, vinyl and aluminum | Quoted per job | Low-upkeep fences and pool enclosures. Price depends on the system and the gates. |
Installed prices include posts set to frost depth, rails, boards and caps on a straightforward line.
Typical totals by fence length
| Fence length | Pressure-treated | Cedar |
|---|---|---|
| 75 ft (a small backyard side) | $4,500 – $7,500 | $6,000 – $9,750 |
| 100 ft | $6,000 – $10,000 | $8,000 – $13,000 |
| 150 ft (a typical full backyard) | $9,000 – $15,000 | $12,000 – $19,500 |
| 200 ft | $12,000 – $20,000 | $16,000 – $26,000 |
Gates are quoted separately, on width and hardware.
What moves the price
- Gates. Each gate needs heavier posts, hardware and careful hanging. Double and sliding gates cost more.
- Grade. A sloped yard means stepped or racked panels and more cutting.
- Old fence removal. Breaking out old concrete footings by hand can add a full day.
- The property line. If the line is unclear, a current survey should come first.
- Height. Anything above the local by-law height needs an exemption or variance.
- Pool enclosures. Pool fences have their own height, gap and self-closing gate rules.
- Access. Narrow side yards mean posts, concrete and boards are carried in by hand.
How to get an exact price

Fence cost by city
Board and post prices are the same across the GTA. What changes is the ground and the rules: old footings, grade, rear access and the by-law heights. Here is what we see most in each area.
Toronto
4 ATB fence projects here- What moves the price here
- Old concrete footings from previous fences are common on Toronto lots, particularly in older neighborhoods like East York, Swansea, and Weston. Breaking out and removing buried concrete by hand in a narrow side yard adds a full day or more to the start of the job.
North York
1 ATB fence project here- What moves the price here
- Tree roots on established North York lots force post relocations and extend hand-digging time. Power augers cannot always reach the required depth around root zones — that adds time and crew hours to the estimate.
Scarborough
2 ATB fence projects here- What moves the price here
- Grade drops requiring stepped panels add layout time — each step height and panel length gets measured individually, and anything over 2.0 m on rear or side yards triggers a Toronto Building Division permit that needs to be in process before install starts.
Vaughan
3 ATB fence projects here- What moves the price here
- Corner lot setback review often adds a step before we can set the fence line — Vaughan zoning limits front and exterior-side yard fence height, and the exact setback varies by lot. We check this before quoting so there are no surprises at inspection.
Richmond Hill
1 ATB fence project here- What moves the price here
- Pool enclosure rules, custom gate hardware, and grade changes add detail time on Richmond Hill fence jobs.
Whitby
1 ATB fence project here- What moves the price here
- Full-perimeter planning on wider Whitby lots takes more time to sequence correctly. Gate count, panel stepping, and drainage swale crossings all have to be resolved before material is ordered. A job that looks simple on a flat drawing gets complicated fast when the yard has two swale crossings and three gate openings.
Oshawa
1 ATB fence project here- What moves the price here
- Longer runs on wider Oshawa lots mean more panels, more gate openings, and more opportunities for the line to drift. Every post has to be set to account for grade movement across the full run, not just the first section.
Common questions
How much does a fence cost in Toronto?
Most fences we install in Toronto and the GTA cost $5,000 to $25,000. Pressure-treated wood privacy fences run about $60 to $100 per linear foot installed and cedar about $80 to $130 per linear foot. Gates, grade and old concrete removal move the final number.
How much does a 100 foot fence cost?
About $6,000 to $10,000 in pressure-treated wood, or $8,000 to $13,000 in cedar, before gates. Steep grades, old footings and tight access push it higher.
Is cedar worth it over pressure-treated?
Cedar costs more but looks better, takes stain well and resists moisture naturally, so it suits front and street-facing sections. For long rear runs, pressure-treated gives the most privacy for the money.
Who pays for a fence between two neighbours?
Many neighbours split the cost of a shared boundary fence. Ontario’s Line Fences Act sets out a process for boundary fence disputes in many municipalities, and each city has its own fence by-law. Agree on the line, the height and the cost in writing before work starts.
